What is Carbon Footprint?
A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted into the atmosphere as a direct or indirect result of activities performed by an individual, organization, event, or product. It is expressed in terms of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e). Since different greenhouse gases—such as methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases—have varying Global Warming Potentials (GWP), all emissions are standardized into carbon dioxide units for uniform measurement.
- Individual Carbon Footprint: Emissions stemming from personal choices in daily life, such as transportation, home heating, electricity usage, diet, and consumer habits.
- Corporate Carbon Footprint: Emissions arising from business operations, manufacturing processes, supply chain logistics, and energy consumption.
- Product Carbon Footprint: Total emissions across a product's entire life cycle—from raw material extraction and production to distribution, usage, and end-of-life disposal.
What is Carbon Footprint Calculation and Why is it Important?
Because you cannot manage what you do not measure. Accurate tracking is critical to staying aligned with the 1.5°C global warming limit set by the Paris Agreement.
Carbon footprint calculation involves quantifying environmental impact by multiplying activity data (e.g., fuel consumed, kilowatt-hours of electricity used) within defined boundaries by standardized emission factors.

How much energy do you use at home?
Electricity and heating emissions are divided by the number of people in your household to give your individual share. Enter the monthly average from your bills.
How do you travel?
Car use, public transport and flights are all converted to annual totals and added together. Fuel-powered vehicles assume an average of 8 L/100 km; electric vehicles use 0.13 kg CO₂e per kilometre.
Short-haul: 1,100 km × 0.25 kg per flight; long-haul: 4,000 km × 0.15 kg CO₂e per passenger-km.
How do you eat?
The estimated carbon intensity of food production (Scope 3) is taken directly as an annual value based on your dietary pattern.
How much waste do you produce?
Weekly waste is converted to an annual figure and reduced according to your recycling rate.

CALCULATION METHOD AND EMISSION FACTORS
Core formula: for each category,
Emissions = Activity Data × Emission Factor is calculated, and the categories are
added together to reach the annual total carbon footprint. Electricity and heating are divided by the
number of people in the household to give an individual share.
The comparison values are rough indicators derived from national averages and IPCC 1.5°C scenarios; individual lifestyle emissions and national total emissions (including industry, agriculture and so on) cannot be compared directly.
Limitations. This tool provides an individual estimate; it does not replace a verified corporate inventory or product life cycle assessment under the GHG Protocol or ISO 14064. Monthly fuel amounts are spread evenly across the year, so seasonality is not taken into account. No emission factor is defined for district heating, which is treated as zero. Purchases of goods and services (clothing, electronics, furniture, services) are not covered in this version.
